Nas Daily – Od Harvarda do beogradskih splavova / Nas Daily – From Harvard to Belgrade clubs

You can read this interview in English, too!

I had a totally unexpected pleasure of meeting and interviewing this amazing guy who travels the world and makes one minute videos of his life.

Little did I know that this encounter and his story will open my mind and give me a new perspective on things, as well as make me want to meet more people like him. AND that I will be featured in his video!

12799092_10154007259578799_3453074062191550006_n

How did you get to the idea of quitting your job and travelling the world?

I’m from Israel, born and raised there, as a Palestinian. I then moved to New York to study for college and I graduated from Harvard two years ago. Got a job, like everybody else and I worked for PayPal, a tech company, as a software engineer. 9 to 5 or 10 to 6, so basically I stared at the screen for 8 hours every single day. And at some point I realised: ,,What the hell am I doing? I am doing someone else’s work, doing things I dont really care about. I need to quit.“ And everybody quits, right? It’s not a big deal to quit a job. But, I didn’t really want another job because it would be more of the same.

So I thought to myself: OK, I’m going to clear my mind, go travel, but I don’t want to be a hipster, travelling just for the sake of travel. I mean, that is totally fine but I’d like to have a purpose behind it. My purpose is to, sort of, ,,find myself“. The only way to travel with a purpose is to document my travels, because I want my life to be interesting, to be more fun. So I decided to put a one-minute video of every day of my life on my Facebook page for my friends to see.

Zašto video klipovi traju baš jedan minut?

12377841_10154071140058799_7840088950644326657_o

A onda sam napravio Fejsbuk stranicu.

Why one minute videos?

Because  if you make a two minute video, nobody’s going to watch it. I was concerned that my friends wouldn’t watch it so I made it simple: one day, one video, one minute. And then I made a page. The original idea was to travel for two months, come back, maybe do a startup or apply for another job and that’s it. But then I started to really, really like it and I decided to extend my travels – so now I’m on day 135!

Koliko dugo još planiraš da putuješ?

1167338_10153841858968799_5863353440661082047_o

For how long are you planning to go on with travelling?

12119916_10153716951358799_3024693327613057018_o

Travelling might end soon. I want to go back to New York and start thinking about what I’m going to do with my life. I want to build something that came out of my page, Nas Daily. But I’m always going to keep making those videos. Even if I’m not travelling, I will continue making one minute videos. I am a little bit scared because, when I’m New York, doing nothing, I won’t have anything to make videos about. And when my videos aren’t interesting, that means my life isn’t interesting. That’s why I keep travelling. So when I get to New York I will probably face my fears. Presonally, I would like to do this for a whole year, so even if I fail I will be able to say: Look, even though you failed, I were able to do it for 365 days. So when I’m 90 I will look back and say: Wow, when you were 24 and 25 – you did it!

I svi znaju engleski!

What are your impressions about Serbia like?

I feel like I’m in position to judge countries better than other travellers because other travellers judge it only based on encounters with other people. When you go to a country for 10 days you don’t meen so many people. With Nas Daily I meet thousands of people through my content, and the way they react to my content, I get the idea who the people are in their contry. For example, when I was in Greece, nobody liked the idea that I’m promoting Greece. Same in Germany. Nobody cared.

When I arrived in Serbia, the first day – the first video I made – people went crazy! They were like ,,Come to Niš!“, ,,Come to Novi Sad!“, come hang out, do this, do that. I was very much surprised. And EVERYBODY can speak English. So I am confident enough to say that Serbia is in one of the top 5 countries I’ve ever been to, because of the people. I LOVE your people. Here I am, talking to you – you actually care about my content, you responded well to it, you invited me to places. That doesn’t happen every day.

Everybody loved your video about the nightlife in Belgrade. Did you like it?

nas

I went out 3 nights, out of my 4 nights here. I went to River and Freestyler, those are my favorite ones. I’m not much of a party guy because I have to edit videos every night, but I couldn’t resist it in Serbia! I mean, come on, it’s Belgrade. I love the nightlife here!

What was the best experience you had in Serbia so far?

This interview! No, I’m kidding. Sorry. 😀 My last day was the best, because I went to Hot Mess. There was a pool party, sunny day, great people around… it’s just amazing. And the night before that I celebrated victory in waterpolo with Serbs. That was also great! We were walking down the street and suddenly  people started dancing and it turned out that it was because of the waterpolo. 🙂

What do you think of Serbians and Serbia?

As for Serbians, I think that they are a bit nationalistic. That’s good and bad. It’s great because you care about your country and your culture, but it can be bad when it makes you love Serbia and hate everybody else. In 2016, these feelings shouldn’t be so extreme.

You guys like tourists. You talk to them. Also, prices are cheap, everybody speaks English, which is a huge plus, and I wish that more people could realize how awesome Serbia is and how beautiful it is, and how welcoming the people are.
